Some people’s bodies have had to deal with (delicious) dietary excesses recently and a healthy liver is fundamental to efficient processing of alcohol and rich food. Benefits of a well-functioning liver include clear skin, good digestion and general well-being and many people may benefit from a little herbal liver support at this time of year.
The herb most commonly associated with liver health is milk thistle (Silybum marianum), the most widely-researched liver-protective herb. It may act in a variety of ways including potent antioxidant action, binding with liver cells to prevent toxin damage and aiding regeneration.
Other well-known herbs for the liver are turmeric (Curcuma longa) (a warming plate of home-made curry is a delicious way of adding turmeric to your diet) and liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) although this is best avoided in hypertension.
